20 MOST EXPENSIVE KEYWORD CATEGORIES

WordStream Infographic

5 of the top 10 keyword categories are about finances.

3 of the top 10 categories are about the law.

THOUGHT:  It can get mighty expensive playing in highly competitive keyword categories. One of the most expensive law-related search term, for example, is “mesothelioma attorney nevada,” at $191.14 a click.

$191 here, $191 there; pretty soon you’re talkin’ real money.

I usually advise people to look for precise, so called “long-tail” or multi-keyword search terms to target because there is often much less competition for them and the people using them know what they want and are therefore much closer to making a decision. In other words, such long-tail keywords are often highly qualified leads.

But in some categories, such as the legal field, there’s a ton of competition even for the long-tail keywords.

If you’re in one of those industries, you’ll just have to get used to big search advertising budgets.

Considering the heavy competition, the more you can do to stand out, the better; so think about coupling search advertising with a strong organic search engine optimization presence as well that includes not just your website but also social and multimedia content.

Those video and photo thumbnails command attention in Google search results, as do those little shared-by icons next to the links shared by your social networks.
